Modern Wedding Must-Haves

Wedding fashions come and go but these six essential big day ideas are here to stay...

1. Themes

A theme wedding gives your wedding day a central point around which everything else can revolve and makes your life a lot easier when trying to decide what to include. Your theme doesn't have to be over the top and can be as simple as a colour, flower or motif that's carried throughout the day offering a sense of unity to everything. Contact a wedding decorator to discuss ideas. Stick with your theme and everything will look sleek and co-ordinated, whatever the budget. Consider having your stationery designed especially for you.

2. Fun

You absolutely have to have fun at your wedding! Your day is a celebration and celebrations should never take themselves too seriously. Whether you hire a harpist or a magician, a string quartet or a karaoke, a live band or a bucking bronco, or even hire some fabulous, surprise entertainment. You want to put smile's on your guest's faces and give them a day that is out from their everyday lives. That said, don't feel that you have to cram your day full of fun. You also need to give people time to relax and chat, and get to know each other. Contact Eventure Limited for entertainment ideas.

3. Lighting

Lighting can be used in a variety of ways, from church candles and tea lights as an elegant romantic setting at a wedding ceremony, twinkling fairy lights and net light curtains as a feature and backdrop to your wedding reception, to a full scale light show for your wedding disco. Lighting gets everyone in the right mood and is essential to creating an atmospheric environment.

Candles offer a cheap and easy lighting ambience, especially during a wedding ceremony or on reception tables. Make sure you check with your venue before using naked flames.

4. Wedding Co-ordinators

You’ve spent months, or even years, planning your wedding day and your nearest and dearest are all now gathered around you. Do you really want to be worrying that everything is under control? Can you be sure that your place cards, favours, table centres and all the other details that make your day so special, will all be looked after whilst you're not there to supervise?

For as little as £125, you can book yourself a Wedding Fairy to ensure your wedding day plans go exactly as they should. All you have to do is enjoy yourself, which is surely the ultimate wedding must-have!

5. Extended Parties

No-one wants their wedding day to end, especially when so many of your family and friends have flown in from the UK and further afield to be with you on your special day. So why end the party after the reception? Make a Wedding Weekend of it! It doesn't take much to tell everyone to meet up for breakfast on the morning after the night before and it's similarily just as easy to call a restaurant to book a table for dinner the night before the wedding. Of course, if you really want to go to town, you can organise a whole weekend including organised activities, trips and tours. Contact Eventure Limited for some ideas.

6. Memories

Once the day is over and done, all you'll have left of your wedding will be memories, so make sure you've got plenty of them. Take time to choose a great photographer (see our 'guide to booking suppliers'). Go for the best package you can possibly afford, get the most prints and get a great album to put them in. You can also have all the images on CD to email your memories to family and friends. Contact Fitzgeralds Photographic Services or Simon Campbell Photography for some ideas and samples.

A guest book is a great way to capture your guests comments on the day. A new funky 'guest book' idea is to replace a standard book for people to write in with a 'Message Tree'. All you need are some tall twigs, something to stand them in and tags for your guests to write on. Once they've written a message onto a tag, they tie it onto the tree, and that's it. A great souvenir!
